A new era of Murray River cruising is set to begin with the launch of the PS Australian Star, an extraordinary five-star paddlesteamer debuting in March 2026.
Departing year-round from the historic port town of Echuca, Victoria, this next-generation vessel will offer all-inclusive 3-, 4- and 7-night itineraries, blending heritage, luxury and immersive exploration along Australia’s most iconic waterway.
Named in honour of the celestial Southern Cross — a symbol deeply woven into Australia’s cultural identity — the PS Australian Star represents both guidance and legacy. Taking over from the much-loved PS Emmylou, the new vessel carries forward the romance of the paddle steamer era while elevating the experience for today’s discerning traveller.
Where Heritage Meets Refined Luxury
The PS Australian Star is no ordinary riverboat. Powered by an original 1907 wood-fired steam engine, her rhythmic paddlewheels and gentle plumes of steam evoke the golden age of river travel. Yet beneath her classic exterior lies a world-class cruising experience.
Launched in 2025 and locally built in Mildura, the vessel is the only wood-fired, five-star accommodated paddlesteamer in the world — and the largest paddlesteamer in the Southern Hemisphere. Spanning three decks and hosting just 38 guests across 19 luxury staterooms, the Australian Star promises an intimate and personalised journey along the Murray.
Accommodation includes:
-
1 King Owner’s Suite with private balcony
-
1 Queen Owner’s Suite with private balcony
-
17 Queen Cabins
-
All staterooms feature private ensuites, luxury linens, individually controlled air-conditioning, complimentary Wi-Fi and direct deck access
The lavish King Owner’s Suite, located on Deck 2, offers a private balcony, separate seating area and premium appointments — delivering a truly elevated river experience.
An onboard passenger lift ensures easy access to all decks and facilities, reinforcing the vessel’s commitment to comfort and accessibility.
Immersive Spaces Rich in Story
Every space aboard the PS Australian Star reflects the heritage of Echuca and the Murray River.
The Hopwood Bar & Lounge, named after Echuca’s enterprising founder Henry Hopwood, provides a refined yet relaxed setting to enjoy panoramic river views, all-day beverages and the gentle rhythm of the paddlewheels.
The elegant Randell Dining Room, honouring river pioneer William Randell, showcases regionally inspired cuisine with a fresh, locally sourced menu curated daily. Guests can expect gourmet dining that celebrates the produce, flavours and character of River Country.
With Starlink Wi-Fi connectivity, attentive service from an experienced APT Tour Director and thoughtfully curated onboard experiences, every detail has been designed to offer an unforgettable connection to river, sky and history.

The PS Australian Star will offer three carefully crafted cruise options:
